For my thesis at Luca School of Arts I raised the worldwide issue of fast fashion. For what western shoppers refuse to spend, developing countries pay the price.
A self-written fairy tale tells the story of the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy. Multiple self-drawn illustrations portray the "unfairytale”that is reality. The drawings are screen-printed onto a dress. We behave as royalty in clothes sewn in sweatshops. At first sight a cheerful scene. Looking closer, you see little children behind sewing machines. This contradiction represents the ignorance when showing off your 5 dollar dress. Just like fairy tales often reveal a gruesome reality through a magical setting.
Like every fairy tale, this one starts with “Once Upon a Time”. Sadly, this story has no Happily Ever After. “And They Sewed Miserably Ever After”.
